On April 12, 2025, the NEK Stick Hunt event at Prouty Beach brought together families and nature lovers for a delightful stick-hunting adventure despite the rainy and chilly weather. This Newport-based event was organized by the NEK Chapter of the Welcome Wagon for families, New Vermonters, and Hosts. The event not only celebrated the simple joy of finding unique sticks but also fostered a sense of community among attendees.
With nearly a families in attendance, the spirit of camaraderie was palpable. The hot cocoa, which warmed the hands of the participants, quickly became a favorite, providing a sweet treat and reward for those brave enough to find cold sticks. Children and adults alike embarked on their quest for the ultimate stick.
The stick hunt was inspired by a global trend on social media, where enthusiasts share their favorite finds with #sticknation. Participants were encouraged to search high and low for sticks of all sizes, shapes, and varieties. From driftwood to birch, and even a whimsical banana stick and an octopus stick, the creativity and imagination of the hunters shone brightly. Each stick told its own story, and the joy of discovery was evident in every participant's eyes. See more of our stick reviews on our Instragram page!
Part of a Stick Review is sharing why you chose the stick, so stick hunters answered questions like, "What would you use the stick for?" and "What else does the stick look like?" This spurred creativity and laughter, allowing everyone to engage in a fun and friendly discussion. Those who preferred to observe were also welcomed, we appreciate a no-pressure environment.
The event not only served as a platform for creativity and fun but also highlighted the importance of community bonding. Families mingled, shared stories, and formed connections over their shared experiences in nature. It was an opportunity for new Vermonters to feel at home, surrounded by friendly faces and the (rainy) beauty of the outdoors.
In the spirit of the event, we encourage everyone to keep the joy of stick hunting alive and to continue exploring the great outdoors. Whether you're a stick enthusiast or just someone looking for a fun family activity, the world of stick hunting awaits you—so grab a friend, head outside, and join the adventure!
Thank you to everyone who made the NEK Stick Nation event a success. Thank you to Patrick at Newport Parks and Rec., and to Dan and Rachel at the Vermont Land Trust. And thank you to all the families and individuals who came out to the Waterfront Pavilion on a rainy Saturday to have a cocoa and some fun.
We look forward to more gatherings that celebrate our community and the beauty of nature!
